As a means to vent my frustration in public, I broke ground on the Hotel Oakland not long after moving here from New York in 2008. The frustration is for today’s music: My contemporaries don’t write, record and release enough of it.
I mean, seriously folks, 10 songs every four or five years? That’s not a job, that’s a weekend hobby if not an every-other-weekend hobby. Wait...no...Jesus, that’s a once a month on weekends provided it doesn’t snow or rain hobby. And it isn’t always the artists choice. That needs to change and the only way to do that is by setting a new standard.
Most indie bands spend from10 all the way up to 250 thousand dollars to record 10 songs and create the artistic package for the album. That’s before they even think about marketing. Then, you have to sell from 1000 to 25,000 copies just to pay off the recording costs.
Well, I’ve recorded 4 albums in the past 6 months, created all the artwork, designed all the websites and there are 5 music videos, all of which I filmed and edited.. I literally did everything on the production side. How much money did it cost me to produce those 4 albums and 5 music videos? Answer: The first letter in Oakland.
Obviously I had to buy strings and CD’s, paper and ink but the recording itself...zip.
The quality of my work speaks for itself and whether you like it or not I’m convinced this is what I was born to do. However, my weakness is taking the time to properly promote and market the Hotel Oakland Music Experiment. So I’m looking for representation in areas concerned with getting the word out. The possibilities are endless and with the right plan we can make H.O.M.E. a household name.
